In August 2010 I was, like many other soon-to-be-graduating seniors, wondering what I should do with my life after graduation. I love books. Book editor? So I Googled “publishing companies” to see what jobs are available in that market and what I would have to do to get one. I found a link (Bookjobs.com for those interested) that listed internships at publishing companies. Most of them were in New York, but a couple were in California or other random places. For most you just have to send your resume to start a conversation about becoming an intern. I started sending out my resume to those companies that looked interesting. I saw that one internship was in London. What the heck? I thought. It’ll never happen, but it couldn’t hurt to try.

Anthem Press was the only publishing company that even responded to my email. They sent me a test and I had an interview with one of the editors, and within a week they told me I got the internship.

So here I go!

This is an exciting time of my life. Two days before graduation my boyfriend (whom I had met while we were both studying abroad at Oxford University) proposed to me. I’m so happy. I get to look forward to a lifetime with the man I love. But first, I still have this internship to do. Planning a wedding is a full-time job for some people, and I get to do it from over seas. Thankfully, I have an amazing support group back home that I trust to help out and make decisions for me while I’m gone (how many brides can say that?!?!). With their help I can give London and this internship my full attention for a while.

There are so many things I want to learn in London.

I want to learn how to be in a long distance relationship with my fiance. I want our relationship to grow even stronger through this experience. I want to learn about book editing. I want to live on my own for a while. I want to learn how to show Christ’s love in a secular world. I want to know what it’s like to call London “home” for a time. I want to come home with an English accent.

I don’t know if that last one will happen (but I’ll try!). But the purpose of this blog is for me to process all these learning experiences. And it’s open to the public because I believe in sharing experiences with one another. If this helps you in any way, I am thankful.
